Did you know Seattle has its very own apple orchard? It’s one of the best kept secrets in the city. Recently, a few of us were lucky enough to discover it.
TUNE employees spent a Saturday afternoon in June volunteering at the community apple orchards in Jose Rizal Park for Seattle Works Day. This is one of many opportunities that TUNE Cares, a program that supports employee passions by facilitating community engagement, organized for TUNE employees this year.
TUNE’s impact
TUNE employees worked hard to prep the apple trees for harvest by installing netting and clearing out the trails around the orchard. Our group accomplished so much in a short time by working together — without fear of getting dirty! At the end of the afternoon, everyone was tired but in good spirits because of the impact we made. It felt great to unplug for a day and help out such a wholesome cause.
“Thank you so much — you’ve made a difference for the orchard, the neighborhood, and the people who will have the fruit this fall.” — Seattle Works project host Craig Thompson
Community involvement
Seattle Works Day is just one of the many opportunities TUNE employees have embraced in an effort to give back to our communities. This particular event was extremely impactful because it gave us the chance to actually see the change we made. We started off the day in an orchard that was hard to walk through due to tons of tall grass, overgrown weeds, and garbage. But by the end of the afternoon, we had cleared out most of the area, and it looked amazing.
Seattle Works Day also helped us become stronger as a team by forcing us to work together to accomplish the same goal. For example, one of our tasks was to place a net over the top of one of the largest trees in the orchard. This required a lot of teamwork, careful planning, and patience. At first, everyone had their own idea of how best to cover the tree, but we quickly realized that none of our ideas would work unless we agreed on one as a group. Eventually, we put our heads together and were able to cover a majority of the tree with netting. It felt great to end the day by accomplishing something as a team, especially after the hours of hard work each one of us had put in.
I would definitely say that TUNE’s Seattle Works Day in the orchard was a very fruitful experience!
